You cannot use a hat to cover bad breath

“And she still won’t get by”

This 1945 advertisement from Listerine makes the point that hats are only good for covering the head. “Barbara” the woman in the ad is trying on her fourteenth wonderful hat.

How wonderful is that – you can go into a millinery shop and try on all those hats until the very early 1960s and then there is suddenly nothing! You actually have to hunt for hat shops now!

“Everyone in town knew what Barbara’s trouble was – she was the “last resort” when a fourth at bridge or an extra girl was needed to fill out a party”

“Clothes, charm, good looks can count for little if your breath is off color”

The answer: Listerine Antiseptic mouthwash – to be used before a date or when you want to be at your best.

It was a big issue then with virtually everyone smoking they must have smelled like ashtrays. What’s the problem though when one ashtray kisses another?

The hats in the ad are elegant – if only she can fix her bad breath – everything else is OK?
