Hat Parts

Here is a list of the parts of a hat for reference. It is my first attempt and as you know I do not make hats, although my mother did make hats. Here we go The Anotomy of a Hat.

Bill

Binding

A narrow ribbon sewn around the edge of the brim of a hat

Brim

The projection of material around the crown, often stiffened and usually horizontally around the circumference of the hat.

Crease

The indentation at the top of the crown in a hat like a fedora or cowboy hat

Crown

The portion of a hat covering the top of the head

Dent

Generally at both sides of a crown of a hat such as a fedora or cowboy hat (see the RCMP Hat)

Downturn Brim

A brim that is turned slightly down front and back while remaining straight on the sides

Eyelets

Small reinforced holes placed at the side crown of a hat (generally a stiff hat) for ventilation

Hat Band

A ribbon running around the bottom of the body of a hat around the crown

Peak

(British eng.) A stiff projection at the front of a hat to shade the wear from sun or rain

Pugaree

Used to refer to the band around a military hat (such as an Australian Slouch and the Pith Helmet)

Roll

The curature at the front of the brim of a cowboy hat

Veil

A netting (sometimes attached to a hat) used to cover the face or head of a woman (it can also be in cloth)

Visor
