Hats and horse racing go together like … salt and pepper, Mutt and Jeff, Bread and Butter … any better suggestions? Here are some You Tube videos of previous Derby hats. I will look for more from 2009 to share.
I love women in hats
Sorry I dropped the ball here next year I’ll be sure to check the date of the Derby. I will be looking for hatty reports from today.

Hi Darla,
After reading the title of this post I knew I would have to comment.
Right before I got back on my computer this afternoon and read this post I had a friend visiting who is on her way to a Kentucky Derby party. In my ignorance, I had no idea what that was so she explained and bemoaned the fact that she didn’t have a proper hat.
How funny that I would be chatting about Kentucky Derby hats twice in one day when I had never even seen one before this.
I have always thought women look stunning in hats but I don’t think I could pull one off myself.
Thanks for the education!
Thanks for the comment M J I love your blog.
A lot of women and men do not think they suit hats. I have been researching some pointers on this. I believe that there is a hat for everyone. I like big hats since I have a biggish head. I tried a small hat on at the clothing show and it really looked silly on me. One woman’s hat is another woman’s poison.
Stay tuned and I will let you all have my thoughts on this.
MJ I hope your friend enjoyed the race and did not bemoan the biggest outsider winning. What a story the owner on critches driving for 22 hours from New Mexico to Kentucky, the little horse that could – cost $9,500. What a story. The best thing a good time was had at the race I saw a lot of great hats. Stay tuned for an article I have about hats at races around the world.
Lat but certainly not least all the horses ran the race without injury – I was worried as the track was very slick and muddy.

I have to confess I watched the “Sport of Kings” and was enthralled with multitute of hat wearers. Not to mention that many of them I would have loved to call my own. Leann Rimes had a great hat. I just didn’t understand why she took it off for her singing debut!
The winner, Mine That Bird, was a total surprise and I’m envious of those ticket holders.
All in all, it was wonderful to see that race run by Mine That Bird. That horse made a stunning finish and there was not one mishap. (We’re all tired of seeing that!)
Thanks for commenting Cheryl
I love horse racing and I have been working on a post about hats and horse racing. I hope to get it up soon.
Mine that Bird was originally raced locally here in Canada. Thanks to the great folks in New Mexico for bringing him up to the Derby level. I wish I had a bet on him at 50 -1 who knew. I watched it on TV and it was a great race Mine that Bird was weaving in and out of traffic like a motorcycle – I have not seen anything like that!
Yes I noticed Leann did not wear her hat for the performance. Not like Aretha Franklin with her now famous hat at the Obama Inauguration.
I will check You Tube in a day or two to see if there are any hatty vids to post here.
Thanks Cheryl for dropping by. Hope you have signed up for more hat fun here.
Oh I forgot to say I too was relieved when no horse was hurt. I was very worried when a saw the mud. It’s too easy to slide on a slick surface.
